Phil Jackson was a Coaching Genius

Sports coaching tips of the day

Your coaching motto should be “Don’t be the same, be better” and it applies to you and your players.

Coaches should look up the coaching thoughts and methods of the greats to help them gain clarity to how to best teach and inspire.

Coach Phil Jackson, one of the all-time greats, had great insights to an athlete’s mind, and ways of describing those. Following are some of those with my take to follow.

You can’t force your will on people. If you want them to act differently, you need to inspire them to change themselves.” Motivation comes from the athletes themselves with inspiring assistance from the coach.

If you have a clear mind…you won’t have to search for direction. Direction will come to you.” Cluttering players’ heads with too much information messes them up more than it helps them.

When the mind is allowed to relax, inspiration often follows.” Kids with patient, kind-hearted coaches figure things out in time.

No one plays this or any game perfectly. It’s the guy who recovers from their mistakes who wins.” Coaches must teach players the reality of sports and how to deal with adversity.
