Youth Sports Coach Tip - Humor

Youth sports coaching tip of the day:
As a coach, I am always helping players to not let the “doubters” get them down. Unfortunately, often those doubters are their own parents, which makes this coaching job even harder. You must explain to kids that no one is immune to people who do not believe in them, but they can use negativity as motivation to work harder. Remind them of what they can control – effort and preparation.

I often use humor to help ease tension and make a point. One of my favorites comes from former Milwaukee Brewers manager, Dave Bristol. He facetiously sums up which players need practice. “There’ll be two buses leaving the hotel for the park tomorrow. The two o’clock bus will be for those of you who need a little extra work. The empty bus will leave at five o’clock.” It's not difficult to find motivational sports quotes on the internet or make one of your own up.
